Artist profiles
Last reviewed on 2026-04-27.
The pages in this section profile manga and anime creators whose work has shaped the medium. The focus is on what each artist contributed to the language of comics and animation - panel grammar, visual style, recurring themes, and the genres they helped define - rather than on biography for its own sake. Some of the artists profiled here also worked on adult material; that work is acknowledged where it matters but is not the focus.
Profiles in this section
- Osamu Tezuka - Astro Boy, Phoenix, Black Jack. The artist most often credited with setting the cinematic style of postwar story manga and helping invent the cost structure of TV anime through Mushi Production.
- Go Nagai - Mazinger Z, Devilman, Cutie Honey. Defined or redefined several major genres - super robot, magical girl, apocalyptic horror - and was at the centre of an early public argument over what shōnen manga could include.
- Masamune Shirow - Ghost in the Shell, Appleseed, Dominion. Shaped late-20th-century cyberpunk through dense, technically detailed manga that became the basis for one of the medium's longest-running franchises.
- Industry overview: artists working in adult manga and anime - a high-level look at the working habits and economic structure of the artists who have shaped the adult side of the medium.
How profiles are written
Each profile follows the same structure: a short biographical line, a career outline, the artist's most-copied stylistic decisions, the lineage they belong to, and pointers to other pages on this site for context. Profiles do not invent quotes, awards, or relationships. Where a fact is inferred from publicly available information rather than directly attributed, the wording reflects that.
