ufotable

ufotable, founded in 2000 by Hikaru Kondo, is a Tokyo studio whose Demon Slayer production made it one of the most commercially central studios in the industry from 2019 onward. Earlier Fate franchise work (Fate/Zero, 2011; Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works, 2014) established its technical reputation for high-fidelity digital effects and compositing.

Production identity

ufotable's productions are characterised by aggressive use of digital effects — particle systems, lens distortion, dynamic camera moves — integrated with hand-drawn character animation. The studio's compositing department is unusually large for its size, and its work is generally recognisable at a per-shot level.

Demon Slayer and its market position

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (TV anime 2019–) and the 2020 feature Mugen Train placed ufotable in an unusual position: a studio producing for, in box-office terms, the highest-grossing Japanese theatrical release of all time. The studio's continued Demon Slayer productions, including planned final-arc features, are likely to anchor its output through the late 2020s.
